Thank you all for your patience. Here are submissions #11 to 21! What a great batch this was We’ve got poems, pets wearing masks, memes and pets to be blamed for typos!! Submission #11

Cleo (the dog) and Piper (the cat) practicing social distancing during the pandemic.

Submission # 12

A poem by Pearl, Social Distancing Advocate

During this crazy time, we should do our part,

So please think twice when you fill your cart,

Think of your neighbors who are truly in need,

Because times are tough, but it could be worst indeed,

Practicing Social Distancing is really smart,

So remember to wear your mask and stand six feet apart

We hope everyone is safe and healthy! Thank you!

Submission # 13:

Dear ABC,

We’ve loved you for years and still love you. Here is our contest entry: Our cat, Zuzu. (When you saw her, right after we adopted her, we were thinking of naming her “Olive,” which is the name you have in your files, but right after that visit we decided to officially name her Zuzu–after Zuzu’s petals in It’s a Wonderful Life. She’s now 8 months old and healthy and eating a lot!)

In this photo, Zuzu is doing her part as I work from home. Not until I started working form home did she discover this “under the computer stand” hiding place, and she’s been there every day while I work since (when she isn’t asking to play).

Thank you for having this contest!

Submission # 14

Phineas (left) and Cheeto (right) Lind have been working on their model poses during quarantine. Cheeto really knows how to work the camera!

Submission # 15

We call her Thingy now, because she is so calm it’s preternatural.

Submission # 16

Angel. This is him social distancing under some bed sheets.

Submission # 17

Yogi was turned into a meme!

Submission # 18

Mabel, a blue heeler rescue, is dreaming of better days at the dog park with all of her four-legged friends in the East Village.

*Mabels mom also submitted an amazing video which will be posted on our social media pages!

Submission # 19

Buster is a sweetheart, but he likes to feign annoyance with that brow! He wants us to think he hates us being home all the time — couldn’t be further from the truth!

We adopted Buster from a Craigslist ad. He’s been passed around a few homes in his life but we can confidently say this will be his last! He’s funny, personable, easily angered, and a talker — the best quarantine entertainment one can ask for!

Submission # 20

I’m blaming my typos on my cat.

Submission 21

ABC Best Pet Social Distancing Contest: First 10 submissions and one extra!

ABC Best Pet Social Distancing Contest!

Hello everybody! A huge thank you to all who have submitted your pictures. It’s so exciting to see how all our pets are doing and dealing with social distancing. Here are the first 10 submissions with a first extra surprise submission.

Submission #0: What a lovely surprise. It’s Pepsi and Scooter, Dr. Tufaro’s dogs. We told them they were not eligible for the prizes but they wanted to join in on all the fun. Look at them social distancing so nicely!

Submission #1: Diogenes and Aloysius

They are very healthy. With this isolation I get closer and closer to them. Maybe one day they will let me pick them up.

Submission #2: Sophia

Sophia Law is a very independent and sophisticated diva. If there’s any position where she takes a strong stand, it’s social distancing. She’ll go as far as keeping a distance from her 22-year-old brother Romeo and hiding underneath the sheets.

I think Sophia should win because she’s always been a survivor. I remember adopting her 16 years ago. Even then, she was an adult cat. In January of 2019, she was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism at ABC. Since then, she’s been stronger than ever. Please consider our beloved tabby for Best Cat!

Submission #3 Casanova

This is Casanova. During his stay at home time he has enjoyed extra cuddles from him humans who are ALWAYS around to love on him now, annoying his sister V, and of course trying to catch that damned red light that alludes him every time! What Cass enjoys the most however, are the long naps on his moms bed where he tucks himself under the blankets. Cass likes to think he’s showing us all how to stay calm. Be like Cass, stay home and comfy.

This is our social distancing scratching post! Top 2 photo is Ziggy up top and Wyatt down below. Bottom photo – Wyatt (White kitty) up top with Candy O down below

What greater gift than the love of a cat? -Charles Dickens

It’s the human-cat interactions that keep our bond strong with our feline family. And with the spring season upon us, it is important that we follow-up with their health and well-care check ups. We take care of each other. And with the spring season upon us, it is important that we follow-up with their health and well-care check ups. For outdoor cats, the threat of intestinal parasites are more prevalent in the warmer weather. If you haven’t done so already, start using flea and tick medication to prevent intestinal diseases. We offer heartworm testing and leptospirosis vaccines. Ask us the best way to keep your cats safe and healthy. Here at ABC Animal Hospital, we put your pets first. We want your family to enjoy the season — together.

Please keep an eye out for missing pets near the East Village Explosion. Update: 4 cats found. 4 cats missing.

<Update 4/2/15: Lulu, Laszlo’s sister has been found. But there is one more cat -Sylvie now also known to be missing. (Photos updated below). If you see any of these pets please do not chase them, but contact their owners below, or Whiskers pet store. WSPBlog has done a mighty job putting together information and photos out about the lost pets.

I think that asking a building owner or super to check their backyards/stairs (or allowing you to ) will lead to a higher chance of locating these lost pets.  Please be on alert, especially if you are around the explosion area where the cats may be hiding.

As per WSPBlog:

“If you live nearby or if you can help, ask a building owner, super or tenant to check their backyard and stairwells (particularly East 7th), the only thing is the animal will be majorly scared and hiding. Ask them if they would be open to placing a humane trap with food in their backyard and/or an infrared wildlife camera (motion activated, night vision – I feel this is the way to go but needs coordination).”

<Update 4/1/15: Good news! – 3 of the 7 cats have been found. Laszlo, Kitty Cordelia, and Sebastian.  As per WSP Blog – Kitty Cordelia and Sebastian were found under the bed in one of the evacuated apartments damaged by the fire. Cordelia and Sebastian’s poster has been removed from the post below. Lulu – Laszlo’s partner is still missing.

There are still 4 cats missing that we know of caused by the East Village building collapse.

Pets may be from adjacent damaged and evacuated buildings, escaped from doors broken down by firemen or the broken windows and and could be hiding somewhere in the neighborhood. Please please help keep an eye out for any lost and hiding pets. They may not have gone far.

If you see any of these cats please contact Animal care and Control (311) or 1-800 whiskers.

From the 1800 whiskers Facebook page: As most of you know already, Whiskers is located a block and a half from the tragic buildings which exploded in the East Village. These two cats are two of seven that we know of who are missing from the devastated buildings. If anyone has seen them or any of the seven missing cats please call 311 for Animal Care and Control or Whiskers at 1-800-whiskers. If you’re able to catch them, you can bring them to Whiskers on East 9th Street. PLEASE… keep your eyes open. All these cats are pets and if on the street may be scared and/or hurt.

Bideawee has also made a compilation of the missing cats and the contact information on their Facebook page which are shared below.

Washington Square Park Blog is also going to update their blog if they find out more.

Reports of missing cats are also on EV Grieve.

Cats may be cautious or hide after a fearful event, but pets in general can be pretty resilient when it comes to dealing with traumatic events. Still, it’s best to keep an eye out for any changes in behavior, eating habits, litter box/ bathroom issues that may be a red flag for illness. Visit the humane society website for advice on how to help a fearful cat and how to help dogs that are fearful of thunder and other loud noises. As always, if you suspect that anything may be wrong you can contact us, or your veterinarian for more assistance.

How to protect yourself after being exposed to the smoke and fire:

The New York City of Health and Mental Hygiene has information on how to protect you and your family from the aftermath of smoke and fire.
