ABC Best Pet Social Distancing Contest: First 10 submissions and one extra!

ABC Best Pet Social Distancing Contest!

Hello everybody! A huge thank you to all who have submitted your pictures. It’s so exciting to see how all our pets are doing and dealing with social distancing. Here are the first 10 submissions with a first extra surprise submission.

Submission #0: What a lovely surprise. It’s Pepsi and Scooter, Dr. Tufaro’s dogs. We told them they were not eligible for the prizes but they wanted to join in on all the fun. Look at them social distancing so nicely!

Submission #1: Diogenes and Aloysius

They are very healthy. With this isolation I get closer and closer to them. Maybe one day they will let me pick them up.

Submission #2: Sophia

Sophia Law is a very independent and sophisticated diva. If there’s any position where she takes a strong stand, it’s social distancing. She’ll go as far as keeping a distance from her 22-year-old brother Romeo and hiding underneath the sheets.

I think Sophia should win because she’s always been a survivor. I remember adopting her 16 years ago. Even then, she was an adult cat. In January of 2019, she was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism at ABC. Since then, she’s been stronger than ever. Please consider our beloved tabby for Best Cat!

Submission #3 Casanova

This is Casanova. During his stay at home time he has enjoyed extra cuddles from him humans who are ALWAYS around to love on him now, annoying his sister V, and of course trying to catch that damned red light that alludes him every time! What Cass enjoys the most however, are the long naps on his moms bed where he tucks himself under the blankets. Cass likes to think he’s showing us all how to stay calm. Be like Cass, stay home and comfy.

Kafka (L) and Toby (R) social distancing. They thought this distance was appropriate, proportional to their size. Kafka is trying to figure out how quickly he can pounce on Toby. She is trying to pretend he doesn’t exist.

This is our social distancing scratching post! Top 2 photo is Ziggy up top and Wyatt down below. Bottom photo – Wyatt (White kitty) up top with Candy O down below

It’s the human-cat interactions that keep our bond strong with our feline family. And with the spring season upon us, it is important that we follow-up with their health and well-care check ups. We take care of each other. And with the spring season upon us, it is important that we follow-up with their health and well-care check ups. For outdoor cats, the threat of intestinal parasites are more prevalent in the warmer weather. If you haven’t done so already, start using flea and tick medication to prevent intestinal diseases. We offer heartworm testing and leptospirosis vaccines. Ask us the best way to keep your cats safe and healthy. Here at ABC Animal Hospital, we put your pets first. We want your family to enjoy the season — together.

A tale of dieting dachshunds, spaghetti and meatballs, and an italian mama.

We’d like to thank Virginia for taking the time out to write such a sweet story about her 3 dachshunds. We can tell how much you love them and know that you wish them only the best through your words.
Dear Readers,
My name is Virginia Kollman and I am the proud owner of 3 red haired dachshunds, two of which have recently returned from an obesity program at ABC Animal Hospital. I wrote this story to convey my feelings of pet obesity and how I addressed the problem.
All dog lovers are the same. We want the best for our dogs. I am the owner of three male long haired dachshunds that I consider my best friends and my companions. My oldest dog, “Dolly” is nearing fourteen years of age and becasuse of his small size, he has been living a happy and long life with giving me boundless love. His weight has been stable for all his life, except once when he had a thyroid problem and got so thin that I thought he  was dying.
My two other dachshunds are twin brothers that have a happy life because they have each other. Always together and most of all playing together with their rich coats of reddish hair, I am so proud of them. Firstly , let me tell you their names. The bigger first born dog is “Frankie” or  “Frangootz” depending on his behavior at the time I’m calling him. When he’s good he’s “Frangootz”.  And, when he’s bad, he’s “Frankie”.  The second dog’s name is “Johnnie” or “Jucunda”. Again, depending on his behavior at the moment. “Jucunda” = Good, “Johnnie” = Not so good.
At one time, I was fearful for their lives as I am an Italian mama and my motto in life is “Mangiare ed essere felici” …“Eat and be happy”. Did I tell you that Dolly, Frangootz and Jucunda have been raised in the Italian tradition as their most favorite meal is spaghetti & meat balls. When I had the twin dogs about eight years, I then realized that they looked like fat sausages running around and about to burst. No longer could they take their daily walk without resting every few steps, trying to catch their breaths. Forget about running down five stairs so that I could walk them. Actually, they were able to walk down the stairs, but you could have cried to see them come up! One leg at a time on each step until four paws were safely on the step. They would then proceed again one leg at a time on each step.
When Dr. Tufaro, the ABC veterinarian told me, “Mrs. Kollman, you’re killing your dogs with so much love and food. If their obesity problems are not addressed, their lives will surely be shortened.” The doctor explained that ABC Animal Hospital offered an obesity program where the Hospital would accept Frangootz and Jucunda as inpatients. And, once admitted, they would be frequently medically examined and would receive the proper portion control and lots of exercise.
I was unable to make a decisions while at the hospital and needed time. Like a mother hating to send her children off and away from her home, I finally consented for them to go and knew in my heart that the next time I would see them they would be trim, healthy and very much playful. Yes, I truly wished with all my heart to again see these two handsome red dogs with their flapping ears and beautiful twirling tails running happily after each other.
I knew they would have excellent care at ABC. Being fed only twice a day with a minimum amount of food being just enough to slowly drop weight. The attendants would walk them sufficiently 3 or 4 times a day around the block. I will truthfully admit, the house was very quiet and kind of sad. Dolly, being alone, kept looking at me and pleading with his eyes, “Where are those pestering brothers of mine?” He looked around the house all the time, but actually, he was glad again to be the master of the house, despite being only 10 pounds.
It seemed like a very long time, about 8 weeks they were away. Finally, ABC Animal Hospital called me and said,  “today is the day that you shall take your redhaired companions home.
I had never visited them at the clinic as I am 88 years old and find it hard to get around. When I walked into the room where their cage was, I softly called their names. They were not sure of what they had heard, But, when they saw my head of white hair, the big cage looked like it would fall from it’s perch. They were so thrilled and happy to again see the person so important in their lives. When the cage was opened, two flying objects landed in my arms. But these were different dogs, very different dogs from the prior 8 weeks. They were so slim and sleek, nails and haircut and so much vigor and enthusiasm.
Yes, I took them home and so happily I looked out the window and saw 2 magnificent dogs red and shiny in the sunlight jumping high into the air, loving to be with each other and being home again.
Frangootz and Jucunda have been home for 1 week now and we are celebrating with a small portion of spaghetti and meatballs for dinner. I had a friend go to the market to buy grated cheese for them. Though I eat Kraft Parmesian Cheese in the green container all the time and it is good, my boys prefer the imported Pecorino cheese. I can see it in their eyes when they “mange”.

End.
