Dogs are man’s best friends more than we can ever imagine.

We take care of each other. And with the spring season upon us, it is important that we follow-up with their health and wellness check ups. Although always a threat, parasites are more prevalent in the warmer weather. If you haven’t done so already, this is the time to begin using heartworm, flea and tick medication to protect your pets from disease. As well as the recent leptospirosis scare this year, it’s possible that this will also be a high risk year for Lyme disease.  We also offer Lyme and leptospirosis vaccines. Depending on your pets and their lifestyle, we can work together to come up with an appropriate protection plan for your pets. Here at ABC Animal Hospital, we put your pets first. We want your family to enjoy the season — together.

Call ABC Animal Hospital at (212) 358-0785 to schedule your pet’s next wellness visit, get your pets tested for heartworm, and to pick up heartworm, flea, and tick medication. Don’t forget to give us a ‘like’, ‘tweet’ and ‘follow’ on social media.

Sincerely,

Dr. Tufaro and the staff at ABC Animal Hospital

25% off Pet Dentals for February at ABC Animal Hospital

25% off Pet Dentals (2)

February is national pet dental month and at ABC animal hospital we continue our annual tradition of 25% off dental cleanings. Available throughout February it is designed for healthy pets aged 7 and younger. For pets older than 7 years we also have Thursdays assigned especially for 25% off senior dental cleanings. Call us soon to schedule your appointment as these slots are limited.

Read on below to see if your pet needs a dental cleaning, for details on our dental process, and  for our simple tips on good dental care.

Does my pet need a dental cleaning?

Common signs include bad breath, brown tartar, excessive drooling, and red, swollen gums. Gum disease is extremely common and causes chronic pain which pets instinctively hide to avoid showing weakness. Untreated they can be left in pain with fractured teeth, suffer from bacterial infections, and ultimately require multiple extractions before they can eat comfortably again. If you are unsure of whether your pet needs a dental cleaning – contact us at (212) 358 0785 and we can help provide some information to help you out.

What to expect for your pets dental cleaning:

Helping your pets feel better is easy. Call or come in and make an appointment. Withhold food (but not water) after 9 pm the night before your appointment. Drop your pet off at 9 am and review your cost estimate with your 25% dental discount. We’ll provide a dental exam, scaling, required extractions, and a polishing under mild sedation while your pets vital signs are carefully monitored. Later in the day, one of our staff will contact you to confirm the exact time for pick up which will be after 6pm. Finally, bring your best friend home with sparkly teeth + fresh breath who you can shower with love!

3 Tips for healthy teeth:

  1. Brush teeth regularly. Use a tasty pet toothpaste in combination with an abrasive material to thoroughly brush the teeth. (silica powder, Greenies dental chews, rawhide bones, or a gauze pad.).
    2. Use dental treats and toys for chewing, and consider a good diet for dental health. Ask us if Hills Prescription Diet t/d may be appropriate for your pet. Use treats that aren’t too hard such as raw carrots and safe rubber toys where you can hide treats inside. Do not feed hard beef or pork bones as they will fracture the molar/premolar teeth.
    3. Preventive care is the key to good health and basic dental maintenance is well worth the hassle. Ignoring dental care can lead to lots of chronic pain and costly vet care down the road.
Follow these simple guidelines and you’ll keep both you and your best friend happy!

Don’t forget that we’re offering a 25% off dental discount in February. Call us at (212) 358 0785 to schedule an appointment to drop off your pet. We hope to see you soon.

Sincerely,

Dr.Tufaro and staff

Allergy season and your itchy pets

About that itch..

Many of our clients ask during the summer how they can reduce their pet’s excessive itching. While low quality pet shampoos use harsh chemicals to mask a dog’s odors, a high quality shampoo will safely remove allergens caught in your pet’s coat. We suggest avoiding shampoos with artificial colors or artificial fragrances that may irritate your pet’s skin. If your pet is itchy during summer months, the best way to prevent a skin infection is to reduce the bacterial population resident on the skin. You should use of a high quality shampoo such as those dispensed through your veterinarian. At ABC Animal Hospital we have an assortment of high quality skin product including our own label brand – Dr. Dans.  Stop by for a free sample through the month of August.

Pet Care Tips from Your Local NYC Veterinarian

Eli at ABC Animal Hospital in the East Village

Eli the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel sits on our chair at ABC Animal Hospital in the East Village, NYC.

Pet owners sometimes overlook easy ways to improve their pet’s health and longevity. Two common issues we see at ABC Animal Hospital are obesity and dental issues. There are many pet foods on the market, but many are not focused on your pet’s health. Encouragingly, the best food for your pet  is not necessarily the most expensive but will depend on your pet’s individual needs. We recommend and sell Hill’s Prescription Diet as they create a variety of food products for different ailments, which we recommend based on your pet’s individual needs.

Another critical issue is dental problems in both dogs and cats. Pets have evolved to hide symptoms of pain and owners may not know if their pets have cracked teeth or painful gums. Regular brushing, a proper diet, and dental check ups can reduce dental issues, but only a proper veterinary dental cleaning will remove plaque and tartar buildup.

Contact us at (212) 358 0785 to set up an appointment for your pet! We provide consultations for weight loss and offer dental cleanings. ( Ask us about our February dental special!).

Top 5 reasons dogs visit the vet

This handsome sweetheart is Eli!

This handsome sweetheart is Eli!

Can you guess the top 5 reasons a dog may need to go to the vet? Here are the top 5 thing we see at ABC Animal Hospital.

We’re sharing this simple list as each of problems benefit greatly from early treatment. It’s totally true that prevention is the best medicine, and early detection is the next best thing! We see these ailments in big dogs, small dogs, dogs of all breeds, foster dogs, purebreds, – no dogs are free of these issues – no matter how amazing and special each and every one of them may be!

As much as we love to see your pets, we prefer to see patients for checkups and preventative care. We’re sure your pets would love to tell you what problems they have but because they don’t speak ‘human’ it’s up to us and you to be able to read the signs that something may be wrong with your pet.

Based on data from VPI Pet Insurance here are the top 5 reasons that dogs visit the vet, and also the top 5 things we see at ABC Animal Hospital.

  1. Skin allergies

Allergies can cause skin to become itchy and dry or greasy accompanied by frequent scratching or licking. Your dog may become moody or irritable due to the discomfort and constant itching. There are typically 3 main causes for allergies: foods, seasonal or environmental allergens such as pollen or insects etc, and grooming or cleaning products. Your veterinarian can prescribe medication to relieve the itching and work with you to figure out the underlying allergen through a consult and advice on how to rule out allergens one by one.

  1. Ear infections

Certain dogs can be prone to ear infections – especially dogs with floppy or hairy ears. Allergies, excessive wax, or trapped water can also cause ear infections. Ears develop a strong smell and the skin inside becomes tender and red. Regular and proper cleaning and grooming excessive hair can help prevent infections. This can be very uncomfortable for your dog and severe infections must be treated with antibiotics and a deep ear cleaning administered by a veterinarian.

  1. Non-cancerous skin mass

Skin tumors are very common in dogs – thankfully many of them are benign. They can be caused by things ranging from fatty build ups under the skin (lipoma) to cancers. Identification of lumps typically require an aspirate or biopsy and examination by a trained veterinarian. Some benign masses should be removed incase the become malignant, many can be left alone. Be on the lookout for suspicious bumps or sores and have them evaluated – especially if they are new, discolored, oozing, or growing rapidly.

  1. Skin infection

Skin is an indication of overall health and it’s very common for various medical issues to crop up in the form of a skin infection. Parasites, allergies, stress, or metabolic issues can cause excessive scratching, licking, or chewing. Constant skin damage can lead to bacterial or yeast infections. Your veterinarian can help figure out the underlying causes of the infection and prescribe the appropriate antibiotics and medications. For healthy skin it’s important to use high quality hypoallergenic shampoos for dogs. ABC Animal Hospital has developed a pet shampoo that contains all natural ingredients ( stop by for a free sample!). Feeding your dogs a healthy and balanced diet, regular brushing, and parasite prevention programs can also help keep your pet skin problem free.

  1. Arthritis

Arthritis is a degenerative condition that affects the joints. It affects one in 5 dogs during their lifetime and unfortunately, we see it in dogs of all ages. Early stages of arthritis can be hard to notice as dogs don’t always show outwards signs of pain. A change in attitude or alertness especially during the morning (such as being reluctant to jump on the couch) , weight gain, or a decreased interest in playing are early indicators of joint discomfort. Treatments include weight control and physical therapy as well as veterinarian prescribed medications to relieve pain and inflammation, repair joint cartilage, and prevent further damage.

We hope that this list can give you an idea of the red flags to keep an eye out for. If you have questions or concerns about your pets health ( listen to your gut feeling) you should call your veterinarian or us, and we’ll do our best to help you address the issue.

Mid West Canine Influenza Outbreak FAQ for New York dog owners

Dog owners should know that there is currently a canine influenza outbreak in Chicago and other parts of the Midwest. Currently there are no cases in the New York area, but we’ve put together some information so you’ll know how to protect your dogs from this contagious disease. We are monitoring the situation and will keep you updated if things change.

Outbreak area:
More than 1000 dogs have been infected in the Midwest but as of 5/5/15 there are no cases in New York area. People traveling with their dogs should consider leaving their dogs home if they visit the Chicago/ Midwest area. If you do travel to the Midwest with your dog you should exercise caution and limit contact between you/your dog with other dogs in the area.
Symptoms:
Canine influenza is a contagious dog flu which can have respiratory symptoms similar to kennel cough, as well as a fever and runny nose. Some dogs exhibit no symptoms, while others exhibit mild or severe forms of the illness. The fatality rate is less than 10% and most dogs recover in 2 to 3 weeks.
If your dog has a cough or other symptoms:
If you suspect that your dog is unwell and may have the flu, if your dog exhibits a cough, discharge, or a fever please consult your veterinarian for advice or a consult. Flu symptoms can be caused by many different medical reasons and we can help you determine the appropriate course of action. When you come in for your appointment please inform us that your dog may have a contagious illness and limit contact with other dogs to avoid spreading any illness.
Risks:
Dogs who live in problem areas (Midwest/Chicago) are at risk as well as dogs who come into contact with other dogs that show symptoms of a respiratory infection. Higher risk areas of getting any canine influenza or any contagious disease include locations where dogs interact – boarding facilities, daycare, dog parks etc. Almost all dogs are susceptible to infection if exposed to the virus. Puppies, sick dogs, and senior dogs are also at higher risk and should avoid situations where they can come into contact with other dogs. Contaminated objects such as hands, dog toys and leashes can also spread the virus between dogs.
Vaccination:
The flu currently spreading through the Midwest is caused by a new strain of the virus -H3N2. The H3N2 Virus is closely related to an Asian strain and has not been seen in the US until now.  ABC Animal Hospital carries the vaccine for virus strain H3N8, but it is not known how much protection it will offer for the H3N2 strain. You should speak to your veterinarian about whether you need this vaccine based on your dogs risk level and exposure to other dogs.
Can humans or my cat get this strain of flu?
There is currently no evidence that the canine influenza virus is transmittable to humans. However, cases of the H3N2 strain has been found in cats, ferrets, and guinea pigs in Asia.
I’m boarding my dog in a kennel/ daycare – how can I protect my dog?
Talk to the pet facility to make sure that they have a plan to separate any dogs who may have an infectious disease and ensure that they will notify owners about the exposure. Practice good hygiene and wash your hands after coming in contact with other dogs.
